Tbilisi is the capital and largest city of Georgia located on the Kura River, with a population of 1.15 million. The capital's name comes from the old Georgian word Tpili meaning "warm," and the whole name can be translated as "warm place."

The history of Polish-Georgian relations dates back to the 17th century, with political exiles sent to Georgia after the defeat of the Kosciuszko uprising and prisoners of war after Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812. Later, November 1831 and January 1863 insurgents and Polish soldiers in the service of the Russian Empire were sent to Georgian lands.

After the Bolshevik Revolution, a significant number of Poles returned to their homeland, the The Second Polish Republic. Those who chose to remain in Georgia became victims of Soviet repression of the 1937-38 period.
